The Mekong River is not just a waterway but a living artery for over 60 million people, as well as the flora and fauna that rely on it for food, water, and livelihood. Stretching over 4,350 kilometers through six countries—China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam—this river is one of the most biodiverse in the world.
Furthermore, the entire Mekong ecosystem is characterized by monsoon rhythms, with successive wet and dry seasons dominating the entire ecosystem.
However, the river is facing a growing set of challenges, particularly from the construction of hydropower dams and dykes, water politics, changing seasonal patterns, and saltwater intrusion, all of which deeply affect local communities, ecosystems, and agriculture. By analyzing both the hydrological flow and the environmental changes that follow this monsoon rhythm, we will explore how upstream water management decisions impact the lives and livelihoods downstream, and how agricultural systems in the Mekong Delta and surrounding floodplains can adapt to these challenges.
